Most of the hydrangeas that you see in yards are the mop-head type with dramatic large heads of color. The lacecaps give a more delicate ethereal look to your plantings.

Blue-lavender Hydrangeas

I am going to be filling my yard with hydrangeas this year. I love the big, bold leaves and the long-lasting flowers. In some hydrangea varieties, blue or pink flowers can be produced by regulating soil pH - blue by adding aluminum sulfate to the soil or pink by adding lime.

Another thing that I like about hydrangeas is how really easy it is to root new plants. Last year I just bent a couple of the stems into the soil - and by the end of the summer - voila - new plants.

This hydrangea makes a stunning addition to your garden.

There have been some advances in hydrangeas in the last few years - providing hydrangeas that bloom on both old and new wood. The “Endless Summer” hydrangeas bloom early and bloom continuously until frost. I have some of these in my yard and they were still blooming in December.

Florists Hydrangeas start the Hydrangea season!

Hydrangeas with their large mopheads and lacecaps are a familiar site in most parts of the country during the summertime. I have had success with planting the florist hydrangeas outside and having them grow and bloom for many years. Here is a photo of one of the lovely florist hydrangeas that I found at the grocery store today. I love it that my grocery store is a source of so many beautiful plants.
