A progeny of “Iceberg”, this floribunda is even more vigorously blooming and fragrant than its famous parent. The clusters of flowers are huge and the fragrance is heavenly with the scent of raspberry. We have often been told to “stop and smell the roses” - meaning that we should enjoy and appreciate life now. Maybe that is why I have always had roses in my yard - no matter where I have lived or for how short a time. Nothing can compare to the beauty of a well grown rose and a well grown rose garden.

If you can’t have a full-blown rose garden in your yard, another good way to stop and smell the roses is to visit one of the 130 plus AARS-accredited public rose gardens. They are located in every state and you can find one by visiting the AARS website where the gardens are indexed by state. The AARS has given their seal of approval to outstanding new rose varieties since 1938. The motto of the AARS is “Proven in our gardens to flourish in Yours” - and you can pretty much depend on the roses that have won this award to do well in your yard.

The modern rose symbolizes romantic love. In ancient times, the rose carried the meaning of purity, heaven, transmutation, completion, and perfection in addition to being an ancient symbol of joy.

This beautiful rose is called “Strike It Rich” and is described in the AARS fact sheet as “Deep golden yellow, swirled and kissed with ruby red.” It is a grandiflora and its flowers are 5 inches wide. Isn’t it glorious!

Here is a photo of the rose “Love” from my yard last year.  It absolutely amazes me that I have made my way to the computer and am making a post.  I have the flu and have been sicker than I have been in years.  I passed out yesterday in the bathroom and today in the kitchen.  But it is so boring without my computer … even when I am sick

The days are cold, but the postman is bringing gardening catalogs. As aways at this time of year, my thoughts are turning to the spring and I am awaiting with eager anticipation. Perhaps I am more excited about my yard this year than I have been in a long time. This season will be the first full season in our new home. The plants that I had transplanted into the yard last year will be established and I am really excited to see them. The roses should be beautiful… the paradise rose was one of those that I transplanted. I love the mauves and violet in this rose.

Hoping that we all win first prizes in the new year. Here is a picture of a rose that I love by that name “First Prize”. This rose bush is growing in my front flowerbed by our lamppost.
